There has been a Smithy on the site since 1203. Originally it was sited at Underwood Cottage on the other side of the ford at the front of the Mill site.

The resident blacksmith would be responsible for all the repairs at the Mill, plus other jobs such as shoeing horses, repairing local agricultural machinery and banding tyres. In earlier times, the blacksmith also made weapons and armour for the Knights of the Lord of Gower. The De Breos tamily, the first Lords of Gower, were mercenary knights and retained a band of fighting men who they hired out or used themselves in times of conflict.

In the 13th and 14th centuries the De Breoses were renowned for their band of archers who were armed with powerful oak longbows, and trained here at Parc Le Breos, and fought in many medieval wars. Perhaps their most famous being against William Wallace in Scotland when they showered “Braveheart” with hundreds of longbow arrows to break their resistance at the bloody battle of Falkirk, fighting for the English King Edward. The Gower bowmen could hit a target at 500 metres with their arrows.
