Jonny the Bike Whisperer can make your ride sing, but you can help too! Regularly washing and lubing your bike keeps it looking and running better while also acting as a basic inspection. Many times, I discover extra repairs simply because I had to clean a bike before servicing it.

A clean, well-lubed bike lasts longer, shifts and brakes better, and improves the suspension performance. Use quality bike cleaners (e.g., Finish Line, Muc-Off) and choose chain oil suited to your riding conditions. Apply little and often to prevent buildup. Lube pivots, cables, and suspension, but keep oil, grease, and spray lubes away from brake pads and discs—contamination leads to costly replacements.

Over-cleaning or using excessive force can damage seals and wash out grease, causing premature wear. Follow manufacturer guidelines for e-bikes, as even EMTBs aren’t as waterproof as you might expect. Keep it clean, lubed, and maintained, and your bike will thank you!
