Gower Heritage
Centre's animal park hosts a wide range of animals including miniature
horses, Pygmy goats, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Our aim is to ensure
that all visitors have positive interactions with our animals. We achieve
this with handling and feeding sessions. There are also feeding stations
located around the animal park which you can use at any time at a small
cost.
All of our animal
carers are very friendly and are happy to help you with any questions
or queries. Some of our animals (chickens, ducks and goats) are free-ranging
and walk about the animal park as they please. Some of our chickens
may follow you about the animal park waiting to be hand fed. It is very
entertaining to watch their antics and each has their own name and individual
personality. We breed chickens and ducklings all year round using top
of the quality incubators. We also use broody hens whenever they are
available. The varieties that we breed are Salmon Faverolles, Light
Sussex, Polish (Frizzles starting Spring 2012) and Pekin bantams (mottled,
buff and lavender).
Animals
for Re-homing
We currently have 2 rabbits
available (Mimzi & Hermione). They are both Netherland Dwarves.
Mimzi is agouti and white, and Hermione is a black self. These little
girls are quite naughty and would be most suitable to children over
10 years of age or adults. They would be best suited as outdoor rabbits
as they can be a little destructive. They have both had their myxomatosis
vaccination.
We have several guinea pigs
that are available for re-homing. Of several different colours, sizes
and ages. We have both males and females available. We only re-home
our guinea pigs in same-sex pairs (with the exception of a neutered
male) as they are highly social animals and should always live with
other guinea pigs.
We have loads of cockerels
that are free to a good home. Cockerels make lovely pets and will do
a good job of protecting your hens. The smaller breeds do not tend to
be as noisy.
If you are interested in
re-homing any of our animals please do not hesitate to contact us.

We
like to ensure that our animals are as happy as possible. We
achieve this by not only adhering to the five freedoms set by
the Animal Welfare Act (2006) but through also providing each
of our animals with environmental enrichment. Each of our animals
are provided with the oppurtunities for them to exhibit their
natural behavioural patterns. This is an important aspect of
animal welfare which we are trying to promote. All of our animals
that are social species are housed with their own kind.

New
Arrivals
 |
This Winter we have had a few
new arrivals to the park. Introducing: Bullseye and Philip
Bullseye and Philip are two baby Pygmy goats. They are wethers
(castrated males) that came from a breeder in Brigend. Gertrude
(our older Nanny) took to Bullseye straight away, but is not
fond of Philip. Phililp sleeps on his own but walks around
the park with Gertrude and Bullseye. We are getting a friend
for Philip end of March.
